L-theanine is a plant amino acid extracted from Japanese green tea. Theanine reduces stressrelated cortisol level and generates electroencelographic α-waves (electric pulses on the surface of the brain), which indicates mental relaxation. L-theanine reduces anxiety and nervousness without inducing drowsiness - in fact, L-theanine - at the same time improves concentration and learning ability. In addition L-theanine improves the conditions of sleep, which has recently been examined in a randomised, placebo-controlled, double blind cross-over test - When receiving 200mg of L-theanine 30-60 minutes before going to bed test persons felt asleep earlier and reduced their awakening time during the night. In the morning they felt more recovered and alert when receiving L-theanine as compared to placebo.
On-going research regarding effects of L-theanine indicates several positive aspects. Below is a list of some documented effects:
- reduced anxiety, worry and nervousness
- improved the conditions of sleep
- generated α-waves, which is associated with relaxing and increased focus
- reduced stress related cortisol level in the blood
- diminished occasional irritation

- reduced PMS and menopausal symptoms in women
- stimulated endogenous synthesis of gluthathione, which has anti-oxidative effect
