Methylsulphonyl methane (MSM) is a naturally occurring organic sulphur-containing substance. Sulphur is a vitally important mineral which is present in all the tissues of the body and in several compounds important to our health as vitamins, enzymes and hormones. The mineral is also required for the formation of collagen, which is the substance that holds connective tissue together. This means that sulphur is necessary for the build-up of cartilage tissue, the firm elastic consistency of which is particularly well suited to giving the body stability.
Studies have shown that the joints of individuals with joint problems of the osteoarthritis type have a lower sulphur content. If these individuals are supplied with MSM, the breakdown of cartilage is reduced.
A double-blind study showed that people with osteoarthritis who received 200mg MSM daily obtained substantial pain relief after just a few weeks.
A number of studies have shown that the sulphur levels in our tissues for various reasons can vary sharply. A daily supplement of MSM provides the body with natural and easily absorbed sulphur.
Around 2000mg MSM has been shown in studies to be the optimum dose for full effect.
A supplement of MSM has a maintaining effect in healthy joints and ligaments too, by providing the body with the starting substances for normal cartilage formation. MSM is a natural substance which has a positive (alleviating) effect on pain, inflammation and allergies. Despite sulphur being required for the functioning of all cells, it has attracted most attention in the last 25 years due to its ability to alleviate arthritis.
