In the magnolia bark two strong bioactive compounds named magnolol and honokiol are present. Recent research has classified them as biphenols with powerful antioxidative activity. In recommended dose Magnolia is safe without any documented side effect and also well tolerated by older consumers.
Magnolia bark has a vide range of applications, some of them listed below:
· Anti-stress and anti-anxiety effects
· Helps preservation of vitality and function in brain and nerves
· Helpful in some allergy and lung disorders such as chest tightness and asthma
· Powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions
· Prevents arteriosclerosis and has anti-thrombotic effect
· Gives relief from menstrual pain
· Gives relief from abdominal pain related to wind and spasms
Anti-stress and anti-anxiety effect. Studies have shown that a low dose of the biophenol honokiol in the magnolia bark is helpful against stress and anxiety, thereby improving mood and relaxation. In experimental models magnolia has been compared to diazepam (a valium preparation) for evaluation of any side effects. In contrast to diazepam magnolia (honokiol) selectively induces an anxiolytic effect without causing drowsiness, loss of memory or motor dysfunction. These results indicate that the anti-anxiety effect of magnolia is partially different from that of diazepam.
Helps preservation of vitality and function in brain and nerves. In both in vitro and in vivo studies the biophenols in the magnolia bark is shown to exert protective effects in brain and nerve tissue - in which the antioxidative action of the biophenols play a role. In addition, magnolia increases the level of acetylcholine, a neurotransmittor necessary for the cholinergic function. There is strong evidence that cholinergic dysfunction leads to memory impairment. The increase of acetylcholine by magnolia is due to both decreased breakdown and increased release. Maintenance of acetylcholine levels potentially favour person with risk for developing Alzheimer´s disease or persons who more generally wish to improve learning and memory function.
Helpful in some allergy and lung disorders such as chest tightness and asthma. The magnolol in magnolia has an antiallergic and antiasthmatic effect that is related to its anti-inflammatory effect in combination with its ability to reduce oxidative stress. Magnolia bark has been found to be helpful in lung disorders as cough and asthma. In addition magnolia bark enhances steroid production by the adrenal cortex (that support the cortisol level) thereby suppressing inflammation and reducing the allergic inflammatory response in asthma.
Magnolia - a powerful antioxidant preventing artherosclerotic vascular disease. Formation of free oxygen radicals (ROS) increases with age. This can be associated with many age related diseases. Hampering ROS formation and inflammatory processes (e.g. by increased intake of "good" fatty acids, vitamins and minerals) and eliminated ROS formation by scavengers (antioxidants) is today believed to generally counteract the development of tissue disorders. Magnolia is shown to have a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Further studies have shown its protection against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) that is known to induce vascular endothelial dysfunction. By this interaction magnolia prevents artherosclerotic vascular disease. In addition magnolia serves as an anti-platelet aggregation drug and is a potent thrombosis inhibitor.
Note! If you already are taken any antitrombolytic drug (e.g. waran) or are treated for Alzheimer´s disease you should first contact your physician.
