What is Silymarin?

Silymarin is an extract based on the seeds of a plant named Silybum marianum, also known as "Milk thistle". Milk thistle has been used for more then 2000 years, as early as during the middle-age it was used to treat liver disease. The active components in the plant are called flavonoids. The flavonoids in Milk thistle is silybin, silydianin and silychristin. All together they are called silymarin.

What can Silymarin do for you?

Silymarin is a powerful antioxidant and it has in particular shown good effect in the liver cells (as well as on many other cells in the body). Silymarin can help the liver to produce new liver cells, decrease liver fat and increase protein synthesis in the liver cells. There are no documented side effects of serious nature but there have been a few reports about heartburn and gases. If this would occur, cut down the daily intake to half and then gradually increase the daily intake back to full dose.
